This article reviews evidence about the development of numerical abilities in children. The focus is primarily on major findings related to children's acquisition of numbers. The review begins with discussions of the origins of numerical abilities in infants. In the second section, the preschoolers' understanding of numbers is described. The next section discusses first- and second-graders' acquisition of formal numerical skills. This article ends with a review of related research problems.
