Nian-ci Fei (1855-1905), whose courtesy names and pseudonyms include Qi-huai Fei, Junzhi, Sili, and, in his later life, Yifenlaoren, was a master of astronomy, astronomical calendars, and epigraphy. During his lifetime, Fei was acclaimed as a master of the epigraphical bibliography, and was also a connoisseur of art and calligraphy. However, he did not compose any treatises regarding these studies; his knowledge can be gleaned only from his letters, diaries, and books by his friends, which makes it difficult to study Fei's calligraphic connoisseurship. This dissertation discusses the correspondence among and records of Fei, Xian Yang, Chang-shuo Wu, Quan-sun Miu, Chang-chi Ye, Jing-fu Pei, and Lin-shi Gu, through which researchers can draw a conclusion of Fei's connoisseurship of calligraphy.
