Around one quarter of adults in Taiwan suffer from fatty liver. Males are affected in slightly greater numbers than females, and the age range in which it is most likely to occur is between 40 and 60 years of age. According to statistics, the percentage of Taiwanese with fatty liver is between 21-25%. This is much higher than the number of those infected with hepatitis B at 15-20%, or those with hepatitis C which stands between 2-4%. Thus fatty liver disease can be considered Taiwan's most common liver disease. Although fatty liver is not a serious problem, it is important to understand the causes because it may be symptomatic of other illnesses. Therefore it is important to see a doctor to ascertain possible causes followed with appropriate treatment.
