Lumbar pain is a common disorder that causes great discomfort for many people. In order to give a proper treatment one needs to distinguish between vacuity and repletion, hot and cold, and whether the cause is due to an internal injury or external contraction. The formula Shen Zhao Tang, discussed in this article, comes from a chapter the Jin Gui Yao Lue entitled; The Five Viscera; Accumulations and Gatherings due to Wind and Cold. In modern medical literature, it has been reported to be beneficial for the treatment of lumbar pain due to wind and damp. In the city of Keelong, Taiwan, where the weather is cold and damp, there are many such cases of people suffering from lower back pain that is exacerbated by cold temperatures and rainy weather. This article discusses the author’s observations that a modified Shen Zhao Tang can provide excellent results for the treatment of lumbar pain.
