This 82 y/o man who has past history of old CVA, atrial fibrillation, aortic valve regurgitation with CHF and COPD, was diagnosed of pneumonia with acute respiratory failure. After endotracheal tube insertion with ventilator support and antibiotics were prescribed for about 1 month, the patient cannot be weaning from endotracheal tube based on sustained symptoms and results from image examination. Bradycardia and transient ventricular tachycardia were also noted during hospitalization. After the systemic evaluation and treatment by consulting doctors of traditional Chinese medicine, herbs of supplementing Qi and restoring Yang, and ventilating lung and resolving phlegm were prescribed for integrated Chinese and Western medicine for pneumonia with respiratory failure.
