This case is a female patient who suffered from acute upper respiratory tract infection treated with western medicine (WM) but in vain. She coughed with sticky sputum, and she also complained of the distending pain over bilateral hypochondrium. According to the symptoms, she was diagnosed with acute bronchitis in western medicine and related to the ”Liver cough” in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. After prescribed a week of TCM extract granules that primarily used to disperse phlegm and clear heat in the thorax, combined with prompting the dispersing function of the lung, the patient's cough successfully improved in two weeks. The article discussed about the diagnosis of cough in WM and the mechanism of applying herbs of ”Liver cough” in TCM. Different treatment standpoints between WM and TCM are also discussed.
