The Effect of Soft Tissue Management on Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit to Pitching Performance in Baseball Pitchers

Purpose: Glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) is associated with shoulder injury in baseball players. However, little is known pitchers with GIRD may affect the sport performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment effect of GIRD to pitching performance. Methods: Thirty baseball pitchers with GIRD were recruited in this study. Players were randomized into 2 groups. 16 pitchers in the experiment group received treatment with deep massage technique and stretching exercise. 14 pitchers were in the control group. The evaluation included bilateral passive shoulder rotation range of motion (ROM) and pitching performance. All tests were performed before and after 8 weeks intervention. Results: In the dominant arm, the experiment group showed significantly greater internal rotation ROM and total rotation ROM than that of control group (p<.05). Furthermore, the pitching performance showed significant improvement (p<.05). Conclusion: The treatment effect showed decreased GIRD, increased total rotation ROM, and improved pitching performance.
