The number of Third Generation (3G) mobile telecommunications users started picking up even in the emerging markets. The European Union (EU) anticipated significant growth in the mobile internet market in the European countries as abundant broadband mobile applications and services are becoming available. There have been long debates on the competition between WiMAX and LTE as the mainstream wireless access standard for the Fourth Generation (4G) mobile communications system. Based on the industry ecology theory, this research proposed a theoretical framework to assess the merits and drawbacks of LTE and WiMAX. The results showed that although WiMAX has certain technological advantages than LTE, but that alone can not change the course of the global 3G operators evolving their infrastructures from WCDMA/HSDPA to LTE.
