From Different Shores: A Preliminary Exploration of Historical Writings on Taiwan in the Early Twentieth Century

This paper aims to explore the multiple orrgms and complex formation of modern Taiwanese historiography in early twentieth century based on case studies of three pioneering figures in Taiwan studies, namely William Campbell, In6 Kanori and Lian Heng. By comparing the life history, travel experience, major works and intellectual network of these representative authors, the paper outlines the coexistence and convergence of Chinese, Western and Japanese knowledge formations and different representations of the island's people and landscape since the late nineteenth century. In contrast to major modernist and nationalist paradigms that emphasize post-war development and contemporary identity politics , this paper not only provides an alternative perspective on the unique trajectory of Taiwanese historiography but raises new questions regarding colonial encounter and knowledge production in modern East Asia.
