Ageing People with Intellectual Disabilities: Dementia and Health Care

The life expectancy for persons with intellectual disabilities will continue to increase, and many of them will live as long as their peers in the general population. Older persons with intellectual disabilities manifest the same age-related changes and age-related diseases as their non-disabled peers, such as the onset of dementia. Moreover, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia, among adults with Down's syndrome is about 25% for those who are 40 years of age and older and about 65% for those who are 60 years of age and older. Thus, people with Down's syndrome are especially vulnerable to developing dementia. This paper aims to examine the ageing characteristics for people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, we also analyze dementia assessment and general issues and recommendations of dementia among people with intellectual disabilities of the western countries. The results can be the future research directions of ageing issues for this group of people.
