To ensure the security of the patients with psychiatric disorders, and to prevent them from suicide, violence, or homicidal actions, the psychiatric wards have long been equipped with monitors. However, some scholars and experts have recently argued that the aforementioned patients will lose their privacy when monitors are used in the wards. Thus, they have suggested that the monitors should be removed from the wards (except for those in the isolated rooms) and instead have the bed curtains installed. Should the patient's privacy protection be given precedence over the patient's safety? According to the ethical principles, philosophical viewpoints, and legal parts, we try to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of installing monitors in the psychiatric wards. In order to provide the patients with safer environments and better caring, so long as the nursing care staff follow the rule of confidentiality, and timely remind the patients of the monitor's existence, and do not reduce the visiting times, the monitor's setting up in the psychiatric wards will be recognized and supported.
