Journey without Regret-A Retrospective Study on the Perspectives of Retired Psychiatric Nursing Staff

Nursing staff serve as the cornerstone of health care. Several studies have investigated why nursing staff exit the profession; however, few studies have investigated why nursing staff remain, and even fewer have investigated how nursing staff maintain a commitment to the profession until retirement. The present study examined perspectives from retired psychiatric nursing staff to gain insights into their nursing careers from entry into the profession until retirement. A qualitative research method was employed, and nine nursing staff retired from a psychiatric hospital in central Taiwan between March and October 2019 were purposively sampled as participants. One-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted, and data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method in NVivo 12, a qualitative data analysis software program. Three key career elements were identified: "from outsider to insider," "alignment with professional conscience," and "no regrets." The findings of this study reflect the essence of the nursing profession and professional nursing experience, providing insights for upholding the philosophy of nursing.
