THE EXPLORATORY STUDY FOR MINDSETS AND INNOVATIVENESS OF THE ELDERLY LEARNERS IN UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS

This paper was explored the conditions of mindsets and innovativeness of elderly learners in university programs in Taiwan. Mindsets are especially important in a positive aging experience. Not only do mindsets affect an individual's well being of the remaining years, but also determine their self-worth and willingness to engage in learning and changing. Innovativeness refers to the degree of which an individual is more or less willing to embrace new concepts and things, and it is important to the elderly daily's life. Currently, few papers studied the elderly mindsets or innovativeness, however, they will be crucial information to deeply understanding the elders in an aged society. The subjects in this paper had 285 participants aged beyond 55-year-old, joined in a 6-month program held by universities, and answered the questionnaire by self-evaluated. The study had four findings: 1) There was a "reversible effect of mutual interpretation" between the positive mindsets' tendency and the innovativeness among senior learners; 2) Gender did not cause the differences in mindsets and innovativeness, but age was the factor influenced mindsets and lifelong learning; 3) The amount of male seniors who participating in lifelong learning activities was obviously the least. It is to encourage more men to participate in lifelong learning activities in future; 4) The government's promotion of the elderly to participate in lifelong learning activities is one of the important purposes of cultivating the elderly's growth mindsets and innovativeness.
