The main purpose of this article is to inquire as to the training and educational process of indigenous midwives during the Japanese colonial period. This article is a historical study. Through the analysis and discussion of the historical documents about the indigenous midwife lectures during the Japanese rule, it tries to understand the impact of the midwifery technology introduced by the Japanese on the indigenous peoples. The Japanese rulers believed that the indigenous pregnant women were superstitious and backward in handling the childbirth process, which caused quite a lot of newborn mortality among indigenous peoples. During the Showa period, Japanese officials began to promote midwifery in the indigenous region, and provided training for indigenous midwives. From the perspective of the population growth in the indigenous region during the Showa period, the reduction in neonatal mortality was helpful, which could also indirectly infer the impact of indigenous midwives. From some reports of indigenous people recruiting Japanese midwives, it could be seen that indigenous people could accept an outsider to assist an indigenous puerpera in childbirth, and this acceptance was based on the effect of safe childbirth.
