Yin-Chen expression (隱讖, elliptical sayings or prophecies) uses implicit, vague, oblique, ambiguous wording to hint, predict, or anticipate. This paper analyses and clarifies the genealogy of the Yin-Chen expression in Chinese tradition, and investigates comprehensively the utilization of Yin-Chen expression in The Dream of the Red Chamber The novel uses various layers of Yin-Chen expression to weave a multidimensional system of fortune-foretelling and anticipations. This narrative technique helps give hints on undercurrents of plots, raise curiosity and tension in readers' mind about fates of characters, and somehow throw a light of destination upon the characters and events in the novel.
