The alkali treatment of Tencel/Cotton fabric using potassium hydrate (KOH) between treatment under constant fabric length and width (as tension mercerization) and treatment without tension (as slack mercerization) were investigated. The influences of tension, concentration of alkali agents, treating temperatures and time on mercerization and physical properties of Tencel/Cotton fabric in series had been studied. Treating Tencel/Cotton fabric in a highly concentrated alkali solution induces fabric shrinkage in width and length which is not the tension applied. The mercerization tends to decrease the softness of Tencel/Cotton fabric. In addition, the tension mercerization was better dry &wet wrinkle recovery than slack mercerization. The barium activity number (i.e. BAN value) of mercerized fabric and K/S value of dyed fabric increased with increasing concentration of alkali agent , and the tension mercerization was better effectiveness than the other.
