The bi-annual congress of ethnic Chinese biblical scholars has two criteria for membership and attendance, namely, holding a doctorate in biblical studies and being an ethnic Chinese. The second criterion of ethnicity flies in the face of Galatians 3:28 which advocates equality or egalitarianism between social groups. Drawing on Samuel Huntington’s The Clash of Civilisations, and against the backdrop of the work of the SECBS, a close examination of Galatians 3:28 yields the understanding that Paul is arguing for the principle of ”all are one in Christ” in the Galatian church, and this principle has implications for the SECBS, calling for a re-evaluation of the criterion of ethnicity as a requirement for membership. For this criterion not only fails to measure up to the Pauline dictum, but also does not reflect the reality of the globalised age in which plurality is acknowledged. The Pauline dictum thus challenges the SECBS to allow the Pauline principle of ”oneness in Christ” to serve as the foundation for peace, if biblical scholars were to pursue peace in the world.
