This essay probes at the potential future development of the discipline of Biblical Studies from an Asian perspective, within the given context of a ”rising Asia.” It will first provide a brief focus on the socioeconomic, political, religious, ethnicity and cultural aspects of the Asia past, present and future within the Geist of the Western civilization, the project of modernity and the current reality of globalization. Then it reviews briefly on the short history of the discipline of biblical studies in Asia past and present, leading to a projection on the future of the biblical past in the rising Asia. It argues that a focus on the ”public relevance” of the discipline is necessary if the discipline is to arouse research interest and intellectual concern among the academia in Asia. It also provides a short list of research areas, modern themes and concepts that are of interest to the rising Asian contexts and also closely related to biblical studies.
