The quality of nursing care is related to an accurate and complete nursing report at the change-of-shift. ICU nurse team leaders were interviewed and completed a questionnaire about the report process. We also developed a set of standardized procedures and a checklist for change-of-shift to improve the process. We compared the time it took for and satisfaction with change-of-shift procedures before and after introduction of the standardized procedure. The mean time required for change-of-shift before the new procedure was 41.65 minutes, which dropped to 30.27 minutes after introduction of the procedures. Satisfaction with the process improved from 30.8% before to 53.9% after. This standardization of the procedure enhanced the quality of the nursing change-of-shift.
