Normothermia is essential for the body to carry on metabolism and other vital activities. However, many surgical patients have anesthesia-related hypothermia and shivering. We designed a project to address postoperative hypothermia after either general or spinal anesthesia in order to effectively accelerate the rewarming process. Prior to implementation of the project, a review of records of postoperative patients who had received general anesthesia revealed that the temperature in 50% of patients dropped below 36°C, and the return to normothermia was slow. The project to improve postoperative temperature maintenance included standard nursing procedures, on-the-job training, and regular monitoring. Before the project, the percentage of patients with a temperature of 36°C or above at 30 minutes was 59% and at 45 minutes only 68% After its implementation, the respective proportions improved to 82% and 96%. This project effectively accelerated post-anesthesia return to normothermia and thus enhanced the quality of nursing care.
