This report describes the nursing experience of caring a patient who had a drug addiction history and were suffered from right leg open fracture in a motor vehicle accident. The wound infection delayed the healing and the patient later developed chronic osteomyelitis. After multiple hospitalizations, failed antibiotic treatments and wound debridement, the patient had a right leg above-knee amputation. The patient experienced maladjustment physically and mentally during post surgery state. Based on Roy's Adaptation Model, the nursing problems were pain, body image disturbance and maladaptation. Nursing intervention for this patient included establishing a therapeutic relationship through caring and empathy, and encouraging a positive attitude toward altered body image. The patient demonstrated improvement in adjustment to the loss during a 5-week period of continuing care.
