Oral Care and its Importance in Long-Term Care

Oral hygiene is very important for long-term care clients because poor oral hygiene increases risk of stroke, heart disease, and aspirated pneumonia that further deteriorates the health of this population. Good oral hygiene reduces morbidity, enhances quality of life, and reduces waste in medical and social resources. Generally speaking, long-term caregivers in Taiwan lack knowledge in basic oral care and access to oral hygiene resources for their clients. The standards of oral hygiene for long-term care clients are the same as for a healthy population that includes oral hygiene education and preventive dental care. Improvement strategies includes educating caregivers' knowledge of oral health , training on proper teeth-brushing, use of fluoride-containing agents and amendment of a health care policy to implement programs that are specific to long-term care clients.
