Online Instruction of Physical Education and Physical Activity During the COVID-19 Pandemic - Systematic Review

Physical activity was defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure. It was closely related to students' life style and health status. Improving students' physical activity was not only one of the important goals of physical education instruction in schools, but also one of the indicators of teachers' teaching effective. The purpose of this article was to understand online instruction of physical education and physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic in a systematic review. This article searched 6 databases including SportDiscus with Full Text, and evaluated the quality of these articles. A total of 9 articles were included in the literature review. A systematic literature review was conducted on an overview, survey methods, research design and results of research on online instruction of physical education and physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was suggested that future researchers could choose appropriate measurement tools and participants based on the conclusions of this article. In terms of research design and results, there was currently no consensus on the increase, decrease or maintenance of physical activity in online instruction of physical education. In addition, the attitudes of teachers and students towards online instruction of physical education were still inconsistent, which needed to be further explored by relevant research. At the same time, comparisons between different countries and correlation analysis between physical activity and other variables can be carried out. The findings could make up for the research gap in the current situation of online instruction of physical education during the pandemic. It could be used as a reference for online instruction of physical education related research after the pandemic.
