A Study of Botanical Images in Response to the Book of Songs

Botanical illustration is the portrayal of plants with sufficient accuracy and detail that a particular species may be recognized and distinguished from others. Although the primary aim of botanical illustration is to meet the needs of science, differences in intent and technique (as opposed to artistic skill) may distinguish botanical portraits from floral illustrations where flowers are depicted primarily for aesthetic effect. This study is based on the text and semiotic analysis of one traditional Chinese lyric poem "Guan Ju" (關雎) which was selected from the Shi Jing. This study will further explore the relationship between the plastic arts and Chinese lyric poetry through the example of "Guan Ju." In addition, it will discuss the creation of botanical illustrations with scientific color metaphors and design thinking, and contribute to the construction of cultural and creative design, and color science curriculum.
