A study on the Causal Relationship Between Team Salary Structure and Team Performance in Chinese Professional Baseball League

Past empirical studies have pointed out that there is a correlation between salary structure and team performance in professional sports, but few studies have explored the causal relationship between salary structure and team performance. This study mainly explores the causal relationship between salary structure and team performance in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. Method: During the sample period, a total of 10 seasons of China Professional Baseball from 2005 to 2014 were collected for 4 teams, including the total annual salary of the team, the annual salary of the players (to measure the degree of dispersion of the team salary scale), and the winning rate Tracking data with the number of wins (Panel Data), and using the Panel Granger causality test to analyze the causal relationship between the Chinese professional baseball salary structure and team performance. Result: The salary structure in the Chinese professional baseball has a one-way causal relationship to team performance, but not vice versa. In addition, the results also show that there is no significant causal relationship between total salary and team performance. Conclusion: In the Chinese professional baseball, a high total team salary does not make the team win, but the adjustment of the player's salary structure can improve the team's performance.
