摘要

人物是影響歷史發展的主要因素，不過以往我們所知曉與研究者大多是世界級與國家級之歷史人物。然，對地方發展影響最甚者未必是國家級之歷史人物，反倒是地方之領袖人物。不過這些對地方有重大貢獻的人物卻經常受到忽視與漠視，致使地方一般居民根本不瞭解這些地方先賢。為彌補這種缺失，本園地已開闢「桃園先賢志略」單元來介紹夙昔各領域先賢典範。本單元歡迎專研桃園文史研究之學術先進共同經營。無私的奉獻，是人類社會最美的文化。桃園地區在早期的發展過程中，現代醫療可說是相當不普及，特別是在日本敗戰撤離台灣後的那段時期。然而在這個現代醫療空窗期期間，因佈教所需，基督教與天主教宗教團體的醫療社會服務乃大舉進入臺灣醫療偏遠偏鄉，奉獻醫療與宗教的愛，而這些長年奉默默獻醫療與宗教的愛心醫療傳教士們，就成了當年守護在的人醫療健康的守護神。在長年無私的奉獻中，他們儼然成為最愛當地的在地人。50多年前桃園地區尚屬窮鄉僻壤，醫療資源極度缺乏，香港沙爾德聖保祿女修會決定來臺傳播上帝的愛，馬玉芳修女等3人被指派到臺灣展開各項宗教與社會醫療服務。民國50年(1961)年馬修女選擇在桃園創立保祿診所（聖保祿醫院前身），創立桃園地區第一家免費為原住民、老榮民提供醫療服務的醫院。關懷對象除了前述弱勢病患外，還包括監獄受刑人、貧苦老人及小孩。對桃園地區弱勢族群的衛生醫療，貢獻厥偉，民國87年(1998)馬修女榮膺1998年臺灣第八屆醫療奉獻獎，民國94年(2005)更獲桃園縣政府選為「第一屆桃園奉獻獎」得主，玉芳修女儼然成為奉獻桃園基層弱勢民眾醫療之守護神。
