This study adopted a systematic review process to explore the effects of AAC intervention on expressive communication for individuals with developmental disabilities in Taiwan in the past six years. Twelve empirical studies from eight major databases in Taiwan were analyzed through the two-step screening procedure. Results show that the major types of disabilities of the participants in these studies were intellectual disabilities and autism. Most of studies used single-subject multiple baseline/probe design across behaviors; the major teaching method for intervention was highly structured and dominated by teacher; and the major AAC devices were low tech and light tech. According to effect sizes in the studies, the effect of AAC interventions on improving expressive communication for individuals with developmental disabilities was confirmed.
