Taiwanese Women's Narrated Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse on Interpersonal Boundaries

Experiences of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may compromise the survivor's capacities for trust and safety in relationships. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine the impact of CSA on interpersonal boundaries. A life-history approach was used to collect narrative data from five Taiwanese women with a history of CSA. In-depth interviews with the participants were audiotaped and transcribed. A line-by-line approach was used to develop themes. Two major theme categories, boundary violation and impact of violation, emerged from the analysis. The category of boundary violation reflects themes that CSA was perpetrated by trusted people, the lack of capacity to resist, and the sexual desires of the perpetrator. The category of impact of violation included themes of loss of autonomy, being filled with inner conflicts, and confusion of boundaries. Limitations of the current study, implications of the findings, and recommendations for future research are discussed.
