Development of Alternative Parameters to Evaluate the Temperature Susceptibility of Asphalt Binders

並列摘要

The penetration test is a simple and commonly used test method to evaluate the temperature susceptibility of asphalt binders. In this study, the penetration index (PI) of six different asphalt binders was experimentally measured and quantified. Based on the data analysis from this study, it was found that the PI calculated in accordance with the Chinese specifications is highly dependent on the test temperature, test specifications, and analysis model. These factors introduce errors into the estimation of the temperature susceptibility of the asphalt binders. The dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and the bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests were utilized to evaluate the temperature susceptibility of asphalt binders at the intermediate-high and low temperature ranges, respectively. The results indicated that the storage modulus estimated using the DSR and the stiffness measured using the BBR were more reliable temperature susceptibility parameters than the PI. In consideration of these findings, the variation rate of the common logarithm of the storage modulus and stiffness were thus proposed as the standard parameters in lieu of the PI to characterize the temperature susceptibility of asphalt binders.
