臺灣域外遊記之文本細讀與現地考察－以林獻堂〈波士頓遊記〉為例

摘要

身為臺灣日治時期舉足輕重的政壇與實業界重要人物，林獻堂同時也留下了許多文學創作，其中尤以《環球遊記》最為膾炙人口，乃臺灣域外書寫史上的重要作品。〈波士頓遊記〉則為其中頗具代表性的一章，從中可以看出他在美國旅遊時，頗以梁啟超《新大陸遊記》為重要的旅遊導覽以及遊記撰寫參考，持續在文中與其進行對話、回應、引用等。在兩相對讀之際，可發現林獻堂雖然不像梁啟超那般詩興一來就在文中穿插詩作，卻以個人現場所見所感之生動摹寫為擅長。其次，透過現地考察，可知波士頓雖在這大約百年之間持續發展進步，城市建物縱有拆除改建者，惟於重要歷史景點的保存仍然非常注重，許多當時梁啟超與林獻堂所參觀之處，現仍大致保持原樣。透過當地現況與文本內容的對照，亦足以看出作者對於各地描述的精確程度。作為「元文本」（metatext）的波士頓，吾人於充分掌握其自然與人文背景之後，再閱讀此篇遊記，也有會一些關於留白之處的不解與困惑，不過總而言之，林獻堂《環球遊記》非但在當時讓許多臺灣讀者得以「臥遊」全球各地，對於現今讀者而言，亦能藉此理解大約百年前的世界景況以及臺灣人世界觀的形成，值得繼續深入探究。

As a politically and financially influential person during Japanese-governed periods, Lin Hsien-Tang also created a lot of literary works. Among them, the ＂Global Travel Note＂, is the most popular, and it is a critical work of literature for Taiwanese abroad travel notes. ＂Bostonian Travel Note＂ play as an indispensable chapter. During his travel in the United States, Lin cited Liang Qi-Chao's ＂Voyage in the New Continent＂ as an essential traveling guideline and writing reference. In his works, he kept communicating, responding, and quoting with Liang. When compared with Lin's and Liang's travel notes, we may realize that Lin is good at vividly recapitulate the scenes, while Liang improvises poetry well. Furthermore, from Lin's travel note, we can find out that even though Boston has been thriving a century and buildings have been reconstructed, some important historical sights, which Lin and Liang have been visited, are perfectly preserved. By on-site investigation and literary comparison, we could appreciate the precise descriptions done by Lin. Boston being a metatext, I remain puzzled and confused by some blank parts, after I have thoroughly understood the natural and historical background. Nevertheless, Lin's ＂Global Travel Note＂ not only provides an opportunity for Taiwanese back then to experience traveling around the world, but also give readers nowadays a chance to explore how the world looks like around a century ago and the composition of a global vision for Taiwanese people. This work is recommended for further study.
