Discipleship and Spiritual Formation

In the past two decades, there has been a large number of research, books, and curriculum related to spiritual formation in popular writings and the academic world. When the general public discovered their spiritual desires, they began to explore them, as did Christians. Spirituality is not a new discipline. The evangelical seminaries in 1980s and 1990s taught spiritual formation in the curriculum of discipleship. It was a rare case to have an entire course to explore the topic of spiritual formation. At the same time, the church rarely had much teachings of spiritual formation in educational ministry. In recent year, the number of research and writings on spiritual formation seem to gradually exceed the study of discipleship. Does it mean that spiritual formation has replaced discipleship? Or does discipleship include spiritual formation? Or do Christians emphasize more on spiritual formation than discipleship? The purpose of this article is to re-examine the goals, elements, and ways of discipleship and spiritual formation, and then to map each other's relationships, guiding readers to discover the need for spiritual formation in the process of discipleship. The development of inner is crucial in the process of Christian growth. Spiritual formation can strengthen the inner life of believers while the church is pursuing the outcome of discipleship.
