A Survey on Interpreter Trainees' Consecutive Interpreting Strategies for Non-Native accented English Speech

學生口譯員針對非母語英語講者口音採用逐步口譯策略之調查

The goal of this study is to explore how strategies in consecutive interpreting can help interpreter trainees deal with different non-native accented English. Ten interpreter trainees whose native language is Chinese and foreign language is English are invited to interpret two different English speeches delivered by a Korean speaker and a Saudi Arabian speaker. The study is consisted of two sections: consecutive interpreting of two accented speeches and a questionnaire. The participants' renditions are analyzed to find out useful strategies to cope with accents, and a questionnaire is filled out by the participants regarding the difficulties they encounter and the strategies they adopt. The results show that summarization, addition, and inferencing are the top three most effective strategies to deal with accents in the participants' viewpoints while summarization, simplification, paraphrasing, substitution, approximation as well as delaying response are the tactics that can be used to deal with accents effectively. Besides, whether the interpreter trainees prepare before the interpreting or not does not differ in their use of strategies.

本研究旨在探討逐步口譯策略如何幫助學生口譯員處理口音。本研究對象為十名學生口譯員(母語為中文,外語為英文),針對兩位非母語英語講者(韓國以及沙烏地阿拉伯)所發表之演說進行逐步口譯。研究過程可分為兩部分:逐步口譯兩篇非母語英語演講及填寫一份問卷。在分析十位受試者的譯文後,找出能有效處理口音之策略;受試者填寫問卷,提出他們遭遇的困難以及採取的策略。研究結果顯示,總結、增譯以及推論為前三名受試者認為最能有效處理口音之策論;而總結、簡化、換句話說、替換、使用接近詞以及延遲翻譯共六個策略能有效處理口音。此外,在口譯前準備與否並不會在策略使用上有所不同。
