Huang Fan-chuo was an expert in language arts and was admired by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. He would make advices to the emperor at the right moments and his sense of humor always made everybody happy. The chuanqi opera Mochen Jian (the mirror to grind dust) elaborates the excellent skills of Huang in composing and singing. The materials in it can be fictitious; hence cannot be used as precise historical citation. The formation of Kunqu is the accumulation of literature, music, and dance for many years in Suzhou area and its ludicrous language may include the creations of Huang Fan-cho. However, the music of Kunqu, especially the singing tune, has not been found relevant to Huang Fan-cho. Therefore, the beginning of the history of Kunqu was from Gu Jian, not from Huang Fan-cho.
