並列摘要

Objectives: The goal of the study was to describe and explore experiences of geriatrics in their transition from their homes to the nursing home. Understanding and having a clearer picture of this experience may provide nurses with the knowledge in assisting these clients to making a healthy transition. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological design was used. A purposive method was used for ten (10) elderly participants, aged 60 years and above who are currently residing in a nursing care home facility and who are not diagnosed with any mental or psychiatric disorder. All of the participants came from one nursing home in the National Capital Region. A semi-structured interview with an interview guide was utilized in the process. One by one, the participants were interviewed making sure the conversation was tape-recorded. The recorded interviews were transcribed into field texts. Data analysis included the application of coding schemes and thematization utilizing a repertory grid. Interviews and field texts were managed and interpreted through these. The study used the Colaizzi's Method of approaching and interpreting the gathered data. Results: The analysis in the form of coding and thematization resulted into four themes relative to the lived experiences of geriatrics' transition from the residence to the nursing home. These included: (1) Changes experienced in the nursing home, (2) Initial events prior to entering nursing home, (3) Positive experiences and outcomes in the nursing home, and (4) Negative experiences and outcomes in the nursing home. Conclusion: The results of this study were further interpreted as the transition into the nursing home viewed as a life-changing event. A paradigm of bridge-crossing, which best symbolized the participants' viewed of their lived experiences of transition from their residences to the nursing home, was shown as a vital process. The transition is a bridge between the elders' resident life and their life being a resident in a new home-the nursing home. The four themes formed the highlights of this transition. The experience itself entailed two poles of experiences and outcomes, showing that the transition had its positive and negative aspects.
