Musculoskeletal and neurologic disorders are common health problems in elderly people. In addition to Western medicine, elderly people in Taiwan can choose acupuncture treatment. There are many therapies in the field of complementary and alternitive medicine, and acupuncture therapy has been accepted by many patients and doctors worldwide. The present review accordingly aims to examine the literature on the application of acupuncture therapy to disorders common in elderly people, including low back pain, osteoarthritis, stroke, dementia and insomnia. A substantial number of papers have been published in support of the efficacy of acupuncture treatment known for its relatively rare side effects and the absence of worry over drug interaction. Furthermore, the need to receive acupuncture therapy once or twice a week provides elderly people with opportunities to go outside and interact with others more often.
