Being the third leading cause of death, and also the third leading cause of death in those aged 65 and older in Taiwan, pneumonia is a life-threatening disease in older adults. The susceptibility of pneumonia in elderly is owing to impaired respiratory and immune function, and also dysphagia and impaired cough reflex caused by aging or central nervous system diseases. Since prevention is better than cure, we reviewed recent literature related to the prevention of community-acquired pneumonia in older adults, covering issues concerning immunization, medication, tube feeding, and cerebrovascular disease prevention, oral hygiene, and the safe use of antacids and sedatives-hypnotics. Results of the study can be expected to help geriatric professionals develop and implement more effective strategies for pneumonia prevention.
