An Exploration of Relative Factors of Caregivers's Coping Strategies for Uncertainty in Illness of Patients Undergoing Postoperative Care

The purpose of this study is to explore the coping strategy of caregivers in regards to patients with uncertain cause of diseases during the postoperative period. This cross-sectional study enlisted 325 caregivers of patients undergoing surgery at an unnamed medical facility in Kaohsiung between February 21 and May 1 of 2012. The compiled data included demographics, disease-related purposive sampling, and uncertainty in both illness and coping strategy. Their coping strategy was acquired through translated questionnaires developed by Jalowiec, and their dubiety was evaluated by translated questionnaires originally developed by Mishel. We found a positive correlation between uncertainty in illness and coping strategy. Caregivers often worked with tangent with coping strategies to help allocate the responsibility, as well as support those with monthly income between 60,000 to 100,000 dollars. Overall, the predictability of total variance of overall coping strategies was 22%. Based on the results of this study, we recommend that health care providers take the initiative to offer postoperative visit nursing guides accompanied by health education CDs, to heighten the caregivers' sense of certainty, thus augmenting the quality of patient care, facilitating an earlier return to normal family life.
