The establishment of geographic information system requires accurate and immediate data collection, digital topographical file from analytic plotter is the main source of data. The essential idea of this research is to use CAD package as the interface software between digital photogrammetric instruments and GIS system. The study has two phases, the paper is to discuss the experimental results of the first phase. This paper first analyzed the data structure of BC-1 topographic data file and reorganized the data file for the use of CAD software. Second, the paper discussed the symbol design of map legend in the CAD software. Then Chung-Shun park in Tainan city was taken as test area for the study of feasibility. In order to conform the requirement of the application of computer-aided cartography, the paper discussed how to do the preparatory work for the digitization of topographic data in the BC-1 environment. The paper finally proposes a strategy of the development of topographical data for DIS in the second phase.
