Background: Caring is a core value of the nursing profession. While acknowledging the importance of a caring attitude, reflection is a critical skill to empowering nurses to care from their own ”inner energy”. A learning group format may facilitate reflection and inspiration through a process of sharing and practice. Purpose: The main purpose of this research was to explore the essential elements of therapeutic interpersonal relationships for psychiatric mental health nurses who had attended a 3C (concern, care and compassion) reflection group. Methods: A qualitative research method and semi-structured interview were applied in this study. Study subjects, eight psychiatric mental health nurses, were selected by purposive sampling. Interviews were conducted after subjects had participated in a 3C reflection group. Result: Content analysis was used to record the process, and rigor was assessed. Results revealed two essential elements, including (1) soften: listening to the inner voice, 3 C inspiration and self emptiness; and (2) facilitate: accompanying patients to help them to open up. Conclusions/Implications for practice: Results may provide psychiatric mental health nurses with a helpful reference concerning therapeutic nursing in terms of the patient relationship process and enhancement of interpersonal interactions.
