Instant Love: Instant Noodles and Emotional Geography

Convenience foods are usually thought to destroy our connections with our own bodies, and our interpersonal relationships. The concept ”hypermodern convenience” means people tend to reprioritize their lives by consuming convenience foods. However the concept ignored the emotional experience in eatting, my argument is that the convenience should be taken into consideration in terms of making us to both reorganize our time and emotional experience. Bodily needs reflecting specific time-space relations and social norms. Instant noodles, for instance, are usually considered unhealthy trash food as other convenience counterparts. Ironically, eating this kind of ”bad food” occasionally brings people much pleasure. Besides, we usually have junk food with a more intimate family members or friends. By eating instant noodles, people respond to the limitation of space, and decides for themselves whom they want to interact with by sharing the food together. Only by understanding the meaning of food choice can we really understand the relations between people and food and therefore find ways to change them.
