The Impact of Acrolein on Steroidogenesis

摘要

Acrolein, the simplest unsaturated aldehyde, is the byproduct of incomplete combustion. Previous studies have demonstrated that acrolein has the negative effects in human. However, the adverse effects of acrolein on the endocrine system are barely discussed. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of the impact of acrolein on the endocrine system, especially on the steroid hormones. Acrolein may induce hypogonadism by directly inhibiting testosterone secretion in rat Leydig cells. It may also reduce corticosterone level by inhibiting adenylyl cyclase or steroids synthetic enzymes. In contrast, it could stimulate aldosterone production owing to elevation of angiotensin II hormone. Symptoms of acrolein-induced aldosterone secretion include hyperplasia of adrenal glands and elevate plasma pressure. These studies have implied that acrolein has adverse effects on human being through affecting endocrine system.
