The Hsuehshan Tunnel was used as an example for the simulation of two simultaneous bus fires inside a tunnel using a software program called Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The worst case fire scenario was simulated in a manner whereby it would affect humans inside the tunnel. The aim was to obtain a better understanding of the fire environment in road tunnels. The simulation results showed that the peak of heat release rate of the simulated fire, which was created to involve two buses in the Hsuehshan Tunnel, occurred at around 8 minutes. When the ventilation and water based fixed fire fighting systems (WFS) were activated, these were found to provide the best protective effect for road users.
