A Romantic Painter: Sublime in J. M. W. Turner's Paintings

柏克(Edmund Burke,1729-1797)出版《論崇高與美兩種觀念的根源》《A Philosophical Enquiry Into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime And Beautiful》,首度提出「崇高」的概念。

”Sublimity” is one of the most subjects in the studies of aesthetic history. While Dionysius Longinus (213-273) was the first person to bring up this idea in the third century, this idea of ”Sublime” was not emphasized, until in 1756, Edmund Burke (1729-1797) published his ”A Philosophical Enquiry Into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime And Beautiful”. In the nineteenth century, members of the English Romanticism Movement pushed forward the idea of sublime toward a new apex. It was at this time, an English romantic painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) who was deeply observed with the idea of sublimity, created ”The Turnerian Sublime” as his personal remarks. Although most of the scholars agreed that his views about ”Sublimity” were basically similar to Burke's, the purpose of this article was intended to explored ”The Turnerian Sublime” by analyzing Turner's works, in order to understand it, and to find out whether there were differences between Turner and Burke.
