Coping with the emissions that affect climate and water: online informative and educational resources regarding a sustainable life cycle of textiles

並列摘要

The global production of fibres reached an estimated 75 million tons in 2008 and is quickly increasing. Heavy environmental impacts and, sometimes, disasters are linked to the production, transport, use phase and end of life processing of textiles. The aim of this paper is to present informative and educational resources regarding both this environmental impact and the possibilities for a sustainable life cycle of garments. These resources consist of text, images, graphs, animations and videos downloadable for free from internet. Teachers can use such resources for teaching units about this subject, if they like, and with the method felt as most appropriate. Reuse of re-wearable items and recycling of the remaining part of textile waste are regarded as important possibilities, in view of a sustainable textile management. Textiles designed to be durable and easily repairable may contribute to delaying both their end of life processing and the need to replace them. Some of the constraints that limit garment recycling are analysed in this article. Inter alia, great importance is attributed to the time consuming, and sometimes impossible separation of the diverse materials that constitute garments. Some experiences quoted in this article deal with clothes where, already in the design stage, the ease of disassembly has been accounted for, thus also allowing for the economic sustainability of the recycling of the materials.
