Performance Study of the Tangible Keyboard and Touch Keyboard Operation

Multi-touch technology has matured to be applied to the use of smart phones and tablets. The article uses the tangible keyboard and touch keyboard operation to discuss touch keyboard's difficulty of operation and input effect. In the same environment, the experiment is done by using task-planning. Comparison of Chinese and English input methods as well as copy, paste, and other actions' differences are investigated. It is to explore the performance of users' operating in different devices. Methods of National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index are used to measure the three dimensions' differences among user mental workload. The results show that: (1) due to poor finger positioning function of touch keyboard, it will reduce the input performance; (2) texting through multi-touch method will increase tangible workload and get tired easily; (3) due to the customary factors, tangible keyboard input methods are still more acceptable among general people; and (4) while using Chinese input, people have notebook using experiences will have good general efficiency of the two method's typing speed.
