Spinal infections are relatively rare, and it may involve the intervertebral disc space, the vertebral bones, the spinal canal, or adjacent soft tissues. This review summarized several surgical approaches for treating different severities of infection in different anatomic locations of lesion to find out an appropriate surgical method to have clearer exposure of common lesion, easier surgical technique, shorter surgical time, less complications and better clinical outcomes. Our suggestion is that posterior costotransversectomy approach is most suitable approach in managing thoracic spondylodiscitis, and posterior transforaminal lumbar interbody debridement and fusion (TLIDF) for managing the thoracolumbar, lumbar and lumbosacral infections. However, most important is to combine with an effective antibiotic medication.
