Understanding Technological Practices: An Introduction to a Phenomenological Approach

This paper attempted to explicate a phenomenological approach to explore the structural influences brought by the technologies. It also could help us to understand the relationships between human and the technologies. Based on the interrelation of the ”human-technology-world,” the approach argued that the influences were not only the results of the prevalence of the technologies, but also constructed by user's continuing using-practices. In order to explicate this, the approach used the concepts of Don Ihde's phenomenology of technology and the methods of Harold Garfinkel's ethnomethodology. Thus contrasting to the earlier technological determinism, the phenomenological approach would depict more clearly the relationships between the user and the technologies in the actual processes of everyday using-practices. Also unlike the network analysis of the constructivism, the approach could unfold another possibility of micro-analysis of the interrelationships of human and the technologies by returning to the actual using-practices in everyday life.
