Analysis of Case Reports for Unexpected Reactions of Health Food, Special Dietary Food, and Food in Capsule or Tablet Form

From 2008 to 2021, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) received 304 cases reports for unexpected reactions on health food, special dietary food, and food in capsule or tablet forms (URHFSDFCT), mainly from consumers. Age between 31 to 60 were the largest group of cases reported. The products were mostly sourced from direct selling (23.2%) and online shopping (19.0%). Most symptoms of unexpected reaction were the gastrointestinal disorders, skin and subcutaneous tissue, as well as nervous system disorders. Among cases assigned causality categories of possible, probable, and certain, 55 cases (64.0%) were associated with taking a single product and 56 cases (65.1%) were associated with no concurrent medication. More than 60% of the consumers used a single food product or no concurrent use of food product with medicines, which showed that most consumers already have the concept on how to used food products. However, there were still about 30% of the consumers with low sensitivity on the possible interaction of concurrent use of food products or with medicine. Hence, there is a need for health education and promotion.
