Disability and the Christian Ethics of Solidarity

This paper considers three models of disability with regard to the ethical question of overcoming problematic distinctions between ”those with” and ”those without” disabilities. The Medical Model promises to overcome the distinction by medical diagnosis and cure, while the Social Model distinguishes between impairment and disability and argues that it is only within certain social environments that impairments become disabilities. Critical assessment of these models is followed by an articulation and defense of the Solidarity Model, which breaks down the distinction between those who are and are not impaired. The discussion of this model engages Hans Reinders' discussion of the good, Bernd Wannenwetsch's discussion of personhood, and Deborah Creamer's and Karl Barth's discussions of the theological and ethical significance of limits.
