The Effectiveness of Green Care for Mental Illness in Community Rehabilitation Center

Green care is an emerging health care practice that is currently gaining popularity in Europe and the United States. This care concept involves utilizing both biological and nonbiological factors to promote health. Numerous studies have shown that green care substantially benefits patients with psychiatric disorders; however, many of these studies have not specified the effect of applying green care to community-based rehabilitation programs for these patients. Thus, the present study examined the effectiveness of green care integrated with a community-based rehabilitation program for patients with psychiatric disorders. A 6-week green care intervention was implemented, where the patients were guided to participate in gardening-related activities, including planting mung beans and sweet potato leaves, painting pots, making environmentally friendly potted plants, stamping with leaves, and presenting their final results. The effectiveness of this intervention was evaluated using a patient satisfaction survey on the green care-integrated program, with which qualitative descriptions were obtained. The survey responses revealed that the patients assigned the highest satisfaction scores to "positive mood," "gardening knowledge," and "perception of vitality," suggesting that this intervention enabled them to experience pleasant feelings, improve their gardening knowledge, and perceive the vitality of plants. At the same time, it can be a wonderful strategy of cultural and creative industry.
